Solar to 'shape humanity in the 21st Century', BBC reveals

By Anna on October 14, 2010 10:20 AM

As part of the BBC and British Museum's major series: A History of The World in 100 Objects; it was revealed today that the much-anticipated 100th object is a small solar-powered lamp and charger for mobile phones:

Here at SolarAid we're delighted that this piece of technology, which we see changing lives on a daily basis in the countries in which we work, has been recognised as having such significance in the 21st Century. Indeed, the lamp has been described as having the power to 'enhance lives the world over' and 'an object that tells the story of ingenuity(精巧) and the challenges that shape humanity in the 21st Century'.

SolarAid's CEO Steve Andrews said this morning;

"For the world's poorest people, solar lights are transformational: if they have any light at all after sundown, it is likely to be a lamp burning kerosene(煤油): a solution which is inefficient, high in CO2, dangerous, poisonous and, probably most destructive of all, very expensive. Very poor families typically spend up to 20% of discretionary(任意的,自由决定的) expenditure(花费,支出) on kerosene. A solar light frees them from all of these consequences, often breaking their cycle of poverty as they invest the money they save on income generation"

As we say here at SolarAid, onwards and upwards!
